How to prepare for a successful semester at NEWTON University

Welcome (back) to NEWTON University! Whether you’re just starting your academic journey or returning after a break, we’re excited to have you join us. As you get ready for the upcoming semester, we want to make sure you have all the information and resources you need to feel confident and prepared. Starting a new semester can feel overwhelming, but with the right approach, you can set yourself up for success. Effective preparation reduces stress and helps you achieve your academic goals while balancing other responsibilities. Here are some key steps to help you get started:

1. Familiarise yourself with the campus and resources

If you’re a newcomer, take some time to explore the campus and get to know the facilities and services available to you. Whether it’s student services or study places, knowing where to find what you need will make your university life much easier. Identify what resources you need and make a list of required textbooks, online resources, and other materials early in the semester.

2. Understand your course requirements

Emphasise the importance of reading and understanding each course curriculum, including key dates, assignments, and exams. We encourage you to reach out to professors early for any clarifications on the curriculum or expectations.

3. Get organised

Start the semester strong by organising your schedule and planning ahead. Use a planner or digital calendar, like Notion or Google Calendar, to track key dates, assignments, and deadlines. Effective time management - such as dedicating specific study blocks, prioritising tasks, and breaking down larger projects - can help you stay on top of your workload and reduce stress. For more specialised academic planning, consider tools like MyStudyLife.

4. Set academic goals

Setting clear, achievable goals can help keep you motivated and focused by providing direction and a sense of purpose throughout the semester. When goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), they become easier to track and accomplish, boosting confidence and maintaining momentum. Make sure your goals are realistic and set a deadline to keep yourself accountable. Examples of academic goals might include maintaining a certain GPA, attending all classes for a semester, improving in a specific subject, or completing all assignments on time.

5. Connect with your peers

Building relationships with your classmates can enhance your university experience. Whether through study groups, social events, or online platforms, connecting with others will not only help you academically but also make your time at NEWTON enjoyable.

6. Explore extracurricular activities

University isn’t just about academics. Getting involved in clubs, societies, or volunteer work can help you develop new skills, meet people with similar interests, and enrich your overall experience. Take some time to explore what’s available and consider joining a group that aligns with your passion. If you’re interested in getting involved, reach out to your counsellor. We always welcome and encourage active participation from our students. Make sure you follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn for updates and inspiring stories.

7. Join us for NEWTON Orientation Day

If you’re a student of the Global Business Management (GBM) programme, NEWTON Orientation Day is something you won’t want to miss. This one-day event is specifically designed to help both new and returning students get familiar with the program’s expectations, meet classmates and faculty members, and develop the skills needed for academic success. Join us to make the most of your semester.

Mark Your Calendar: NEWTON Orientation Day is on 23rd September

While NEWTON Orientation Day is a great opportunity, it’s just one of the many resources available to you. Be sure to take advantage of the support services offered by the university, whether you need academic advice, personal support, or career guidance.

8. Reflect and improve continuously

Engage in regular reflection and continuous improvement to maximise your learning and personal growth. By regularly assessing your progress, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and setting specific goals, you can tailor your strategies to better meet your educational objectives. For effective reflection, you can keep a learning journal, seek feedback from peers and professors, and review your performance against set benchmarks. Embracing mistakes as a natural part of the learning process is crucial. To learn from errors, analyse what went wrong, seek feedback, and adjust your strategies accordingly. This approach fosters resilience, helps refine skills, and leads to more effective learning and personal development. Consider asking your counsellor about our new PREMIUM Program, specifically designed to offer you exceptional personal and managerial competencies through mentoring and coaching.

Student Council of NEWTON University and Vysoká Škola Sting: Make Your Voice Count

We all sometimes feel that our school could be even better. Better study spaces, more engaging events, more opportunities to connect with professionals. The Student Council is where ideas turn into reality. And now you can be part of it. It doesn’t matter whether you study at NEWTON or Sting, in Czech or in English – everyone can apply.

Student Tips: Hacks that will save you time and nerves

The first weeks at university can be quite a ride. One day you are looking for a classroom, the next you are trying to sort out enrolment, and in the evening you realise you have no idea where to get the lecture notes. Add to that a new city, lots of people and the feeling that everyone else knows more than you.

First friendships, first shared drink and first inside jokes. Informal meet-ups in Prague and Brno kicked off the semester.

Starting university is always a bit of a leap into the unknown. It’s not just about making it to enrolment or checking your timetable. It’s about unfamiliar faces, a new pace, and big expectations. Those first days are mainly about whether you meet the people who will make the whole experience worthwhile. That’s why we invited our incoming first-year students to informal meet-ups before the official start of the academic year.
