You get an intensely immersive environment that challenges established perspectives. The summer edition of NEWTON Global Leaders Academy 2026 delivered a programme that packed the momentum of an entire semester into one action filled week. The result? A new generation of confident leaders ready to embrace the challenges of tomorrow.

For most people, Tenerife means a holiday postcard: ocean views, beaches and year-round sunshine. Our student Nela sees the island through a very different lens. A hackathon is often viewed as an intensive creative format in which teams seek solutions to a specific brief within a limited timeframe. In business, start-up, innovation, and educational settings, it is used precisely because it combines analysis, creativity, teamwork, decision-making, and the ability to deliver a concrete output under conditions that are far from comfortable. From the perspective of the Programme Guarantor for Entrepreneurship and Leadership Development, however, a hackathon is something more. It is a powerful experiential environment where the psychology of leadership naturally comes to light.

The idea of international business often starts with global negotiations, foreign travel, and fluent presentations in a foreign language. The reality, however, is shaped in everyday moments – balancing work and study, bridging cultural differences, and managing rigorous academic demands. Graduates of the English-taught Bachelor’s programmes in Global Business and Management (GBM) at NEWTON University share their personal experiences on what their studies truly gave them for their professional and personal lives.

Three people from NEWTON University travelled to Svalbard. What did the Arctic expedition teach them about resilience, leadership, teamwork and sustainability?

Traditional academic education often faces a major paradox. While university lecture halls offer a safe environment and deep theoretical foundations, the real business world demands entirely different qualities: agility under pressure, risk tolerance, a high level of personal responsibility, and an empathetic approach to people. The question is not whether academic teaching needs theory, but how higher education can bridge academic knowledge with the uncompromising reality of the market.

Moving from secondary school to university comes with an exciting sense of freedom. It also comes with a reality check: you are suddenly responsible for managing your own time, workload and priorities. No teacher is chasing you about daily homework, and a timetable with plenty of gaps can make it seem as though you have all the time in the world. That is, until exam season arrives. So how do you stay on top of your studies, build your career and still have time for a life outside university? It all starts with learning how to manage your time effectively.
